Thought for Thursday:

So here's my NEW project. . . .

A friend of my parents has pretty much "inherited" a neglected horse. His name is Raz, he's 11 years old. Raz hasn't been ridden in 5 years, maybe more. He used to be kept in a pasture with cattle...and had very little human contact. Raz gets spooked pretty easily, and Raz can be a spaz.

So whats my project??? I want to get this horse used to people, and I want to be able to ride him. No Im not buying this horse. But they guy that owns him told me that if I could tame him, I could ride him whenever.

I can't do it by myself. I have never brought a horse from being a jumpy. bucking. spooked. unsure of people horse to a nice. clam. relaxed. rideable(sp?) horse. So what am I going to do???? Well there's a couple ladies I know that are awesome with horses. One of them happens to be Bobby's neighbor, Anita. I called her tonight. And she didn't even hesitate. I asked if she would maybe be willing to come out and meet this horse just to tell me what she thought.
And she said "Of course I will!"
How awesome is that???

Im not sure what has turned this horse into what he is today. Part of the problem I think is just being lonesome. And the other I am not sure about, maybe he was abused, or just plain old neglected... hopefully with a little work, time and energy and with Anita's help... we can get him to a place where we can ride him. Only time will tell.

Nicole, I know you have worked with horses....anything you could fill me in on would be great! And if anyone else out there has some advice....let me know, I am all ears!

Good luck with Raz! Maybe just a little extra trust, attention & affection will win him over. Try a few small treats too to see what he favors; small cuts of apple, baby carrots, some horses even like starlight mints (sweet tooth?) when he gets close enough, give him a little tiny sample of a treat. They say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach... ha!
    Sounds like a fun project!

I must have totally skimmed over this post- and there you even requested some advice from me LOL!

I'll email you. I'm quite rusty on horse training, but I pretty much trained Lacey (bought her when she was 3 and just greenbroke) and have helped my friend train two of her horses. I don't know a ton, but I'll see what I can remember LOL!
