Soo here's the scoop....
Yesterday I worked during the day at the hospital.... well I had just gotten a patient back from surgery and he was doing well, but he was in pain. A nurse Lindsey gave him some Demerol ( a narcotic) to ease his pain. Well, I was in there taking his vital signs and talking with him and he was joking around like he had been before surgery.
Well he was getting sleepy...and then wasn't really breathing well. While I was taking his Vital signs, his oxygen stats were dropping, I mean seriously dropping, he was down to the low 40's. What we like to see is anything about 90% ...
Okay, picture this....the wife is in there, I'm trying to wake him up to take a breath...and Jeanette (another aide) walks in to check on things... and I try to very VERY calmly say, " Go get his nurse please..." and I give her a look that says NOW!!! So she runs down the hall to find someone, anyone! Meanwhile I'm in the room, rubbing his chest trying to get him to wake up and take a breath, and he is almost completely unresponsive....
Jamie (nurse) walks in and I tell her whats going on, she gets the wife to the waiting room and runs to get Narcan ( which is a drug that is an antagonist to the narcotic) Lindsey comes in to see what going on and I say, " Linds, he is barley breathing, get the crash cart...hurry" so finally after the narcan is given he start to come around...
Let me tell you...my adrenalin was pumping so fast and so hard... I was burning up when I walked out of that room and had to, HAD TO get outside for air. I get outside and I felt so sick to my stomach that I threw up...
The patient was fine.
And On the drive home, all I could think was that if I hadn't been in there at that moment, he would have died. Its kinda cool and scary all at the same time to know that. And to know that every move you make that person is depending on you to get them through.
What a day...let me tell ya.
